1. Bump up the thermostat: Set your thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees when you’re sleeping or away from home. Doing it a few hours a day can lower your annual heating and cooling costs quite a bit. A smart thermostate like an Ecobee or Nest can maximize your savings.

2. Wash your clothes in cold water: Use warm or cold water to wash your clothes and cut your per-load energy usage by at least half. Plus your clothes will last longer and fade less if you use colder wtaer.

3. Install motion activated lighting: Leaving lights on in the closet or the garage can waste power for days at a time. Install a motion activated light or light switch to make sure the lights go out when you don't need them.

4. Take shorter showers: Cutting two minutes off your shower time can reduce your water usage by five gallons. Plus you'll have more time to do things you love.

5. Swap out your lightbulbs: Save $75 per year by swapping out the bulbs in your five most-used light fixtures with LED bulbs. Skip the compact flourescents, LEDs are far more efficient.
